Experience:
I practised for fifteen years as an advocate (barrister) at the Johannesburg Bar, arguing cases in South Africa's High Court, Supreme Court of Appeal and Constitutional Court before relocating to New York, where I am now admitted and in practice. My work covered commercial contracts, company law, insolvency and cross-border disputes, including matters for clients such as De Beers and a reported airport valuation appeal, and eleven consecutive arbitration wins as counsel.
I now serve as an expert on South African law for US litigation and arbitration. Courts and tribunals here regularly need a qualified South African lawyer to explain what SA law actually says and how it operates in practice: whether a contract is enforceable, what a liquidator can and cannot do, how a South African judgment or arbitral award is enforced, what discovery assistance SA courts will give. Having spent my career arguing these questions in front of South African judges rather than writing about them from a distance, I can give an opinion that holds up under cross-examination.
I am admitted in New York, so I am familiar with US proceedings and expert report requirements, and I work comfortably with instructing counsel on tight timetables.
