Services:
I regularly prepare expert witness reports for clinical negligence cases in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery on areas including dentoalveolar (e.g. third molar) surgery and associated nerve injuries, benign salivary gland pathology, temporomandibular disorders, maxillofacial trauma and non-melanoma skin cancer.
I prepare thorough court compliant Condition & Prognosis and Liability & Causation reports, but am also happy to prepare "screening" reports with written advice on liability at the outset to determine the merits of a case. I am willing to defer fees until the conclusion of the case in most instances.
I am also happy to be instructed on personal injury cases including facial fractures and soft tissue injuries.
I have completed expert witness training with Bond Solon in:
Courtroom Skills
Excellence in Report Writing
GDPR for Expert Witnesses
Cross-examination Day
Civil Law & Procedure
This has culminated in the award of the Cardiff University Bond Solon (CUBS) Expert Witness Certificate (Civil Law) and I am indemnified to provide this work specifically.

Experience:
I am a Consultant Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon and Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer based in Birmingham with private clinics spanning Birmingham and the West Midlands.
I graduated in dentistry with distinction at the University of Malta in 2003, finishing first in my year. Following a few years working for the state health service in Malta, I relocated to the United Kingdom in 2005, initially working in paediatric dentistry and orthodontics. Following junior posts in Maxillofacial Surgery in the West of Scotland, I completed the Membership of the Faculty of Dental Surgery of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow in 2006.
In 2007, I started an accelerated medical degree at the University of Birmingham, completing this in 2010 with distinction, coming first in my year and being awarded the Sir Arthur Thomson Gold Medal and the Chancellor's Prize, awarded annually for outstanding achievement and contributions to the general life of the University.
Junior doctor jobs followed around the West Midlands, including core surgical training in Plastic Surgery and completion of the Membership of the Royal College of Surgeons exams in 2012. I was then granted a place on a higher surgical training programme in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery in the West Midlands, training in the whole remit of the specialty and successfully completing my exit Fellowship exams in 2017, as well as gaining a Masters in Medical Education with distinction from the acclaimed programme at the Centre for Medical Education, University of Dundee.
I rounded off my training with two nationally awarded Training Interface Group (TIG) Fellowships in Reconstructive & Aesthetic Surgery and the Management of Skin Cancer in Nottingham and Leeds respectively in 2018, prior to taking up the post of Consultant in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust. I also hold an Honorary Consultant in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery contract with Sandwell and West Birmingham Hospitals NHS Trust. In my NHS practice I have subspecialty interests in temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) including total alloplastic joint replacement and the management of skin cancer.
My research activity is varied and recent projects have included the following:
Postgraduate training in temporomandibular joint (TMJ) surgery
The design, implementation and assessment of virtual learning environments (VLEs) in postgraduate education
Restructuring of post-graduate education in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery during the COVID-19 pandemic
Delphi study to generate variables for inclusion in a clinical predictor rule for the likelihood of facial fractures on a plain film radiograph
The place of Aristotelian ethics in postgraduate surgical training
I have a Masters in Medical Education (MMedEd) from the critically acclaimed Centre for Medical Education at the University of Dundee. I am currently undertaking a doctoral degree (MD) by research at the Institute of Inflammation and Ageing at the University of Birmingham.
I regularly publish in peer-reviewed journals such as the British Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Journal of Medical Ethics and the Annals of the Royal College of Surgeons. I have recently been invited to join the UNESCO Chair of Bioethics Unit based at Edge Hill University in Ormskirk and am also an Associate Editor for the British Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.
