His areas of specialism as an expert witness include: Invasive plant survey, identification, mapping, and evaluating routes of spread and dispersal. Control and management and remediation (eradication) treatments. Independent audit and appraisal of management actions. Assessment of Japanese knotweed growth and spread with relative age assessment (relevant for establishing liability in civil claims). Dan has provided numerous Government depositions, including the House of Commons Science & Technology Committee 'Inquiry: Japanese Knotweed and the built environment' (2019). He was a member of the Working Group for the new RICS Professional Standard: 'Japanese Knotweed and residential property' (2019-2022) and has been a member of the Wales Biodiversity Partnership (WBP) Invasive Non-Native Species (INNS) Group since 2015.

He is also an Honorary Research Associate in the Department of Biosciences at Swansea University. As Managing Director of Advanced Invasives, Dan has authored reports for UK Government and guidance documents for UK and Welsh Government, including provision of best practice management guidance for Japanese Knotweed, Himalayan Balsam and Giant Hogweed. He has also delivered strategic invasive plant management best practice for major public landowners and infrastructure operators, and has also provided expert advice on weed and invasive plant management projects to government, public sector organisations and statutory bodies.
