Qualifications:
Dr. Charla Watkins, DNP, PMHNP-BC, FNP-BC, is a dual board-certified Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner and Family Nurse Practitioner with more than 25 years of forensic nursing experience. She earned her Doctor of Nursing Practice in Psychiatric Mental Health from the University of Tennessee Health Science Center in Memphis, Tennessee. Dr. Watkins is also a trained forensic interviewer and has specialized expertise in child sexual abuse examinations, trauma assessment, psychiatric nursing, and forensic victim evaluation.
She has authored multiple chapters in nationally recognized forensic textbooks, including Forensic Victimology and the Rape Investigation Handbook, published by Elsevier Academic Press. Her doctoral research focused on human sex trafficking and the identification of trafficking victims within healthcare settings.
Dr. Watkins received the Washington Regional Eagle Award for Outstanding Healthcare Leadership in 2004 and the Doctor of Nursing Practice Clinical Award in 2015 for excellence in clinical judgment and ethical decision-making.

Experience:
Dr. Watkins has conducted approximately 2,000 sexual assault examinations involving children, adolescents, and adults, in addition to more than 1,500 forensic interviews. Her professional experience includes extensive work in cases involving child sexual abuse, sexual assault, trauma, psychiatric malpractice, emergency care, and abuse investigations.
She has testified as an expert witness approximately 200 times throughout her career and has been retained in matters across the United States. Dr. Watkins served as an expert in a high-profile Dartmouth University sexual assault case in 2014 in conjunction with Williams & Connolly LLP of Washington, D.C.
In addition to forensic casework, Dr. Watkins maintains a private psychiatric practice in Fayetteville, Arkansas, where she provides psychotherapy, medication management, trauma treatment, and mental health services to patients across the lifespan. She is experienced in EMDR therapy, betrayal trauma, bipolar disorder, depression, anxiety disorders, and abuse-related psychiatric conditions.
